If Not for the Pitchfork and Manure

Story heard from my awesome cousins after Uncle Bob’s funeral….

My grandfather was working on the family farm in Ireland, mucking out animal pens with a pitchfork. One of his nephews who was working with him accidently stabbed him in the arm with his pitchfork.

The injury and recovery were such that my grandfather was unable to leave Ireland and had to delay his trip by 3-4 weeks. Turned out to be a good thing, because he had originally booked passage on the Titanic.

Loved the description of my Uncle Bob’s (Robert L. Koehler’s) children by one of his grandchildren at his funeral this week.

I found this picture in with a group of pictures that my brother Jack gave to me a few years ago. Apparently he was looking for things to do at my mom’s house in Hollister when he would visit. He went through her photos and pulled some out. God only knows if he decided he was the person to decide who got what photo – I have dreams of getting them all on a server somewhere for everyone to access!

The date on this picture is March, 1959. There are no notes as to where it was taken or if there was a reason for the gathering. Have any ideas, or stories to share? Leave them in the comments below…
